The Autumn Calligraphy Workshop with Loredana Zega will take place in late October 2025, set in the enchanting village of Vipavski Križ—a jewel perched atop a hill in the heart of Slovenia’s stunning Vipava Valley.

With its fairytale silhouette visible from afar, Vipavski Križ is one of the most treasured historical and cultural monuments in Slovenia. The entire village is a protected heritage site, rich with stories etched into its ancient walls and cobbled streets.

The local community is warm and welcoming—don’t be surprised if someone greets you with a few words in English, German, or even Italian, thanks to the village’s proximity to the Italian border. Younger generations especially speak English fluently, making it easy to connect.

This inspiring setting, steeped in history and surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, is the perfect place to slow down, create, and immerse yourself in the timeless art of calligraphy, Illumination and bookbinding.

THE BEAUTY OF THE ROTUNDA – A Journey into Italian Gothic from Venice Manuscripts  

We begin our calligraphic journey with inspiration from the manuscripts of the Museo Correr library in Venice. This workshop will focus on the elegant Rotunda script—a graceful and distinctive form of Italian Gothic.
We'll explore stunning examples from historical manuscripts and dive deep into lowercase letterforms, studying their proportions, rhythm, and structure. Together, we'll work toward completing one side of a small folio, paying close attention to authentic layout and design.
To make the experience even more special, you'll have the chance to try writing with quills on the scraps of real parchment—bringing a touch of history to your fingertips.
No prior experience needed—just curiosity and love for the letter!

Step into the shimmering world of medieval manuscripts and gilded artistry!
This hands-on workshop is dedicated to the magic of illumination—from the glow of real and loose gold leaf to metallic pigments, and gold and silver gouaches.
Inspired by the exquisite Miniature del Museo Correr di Venezia, you’ll choose an initial or motif and learn to recreate it. Prefer a modern twist? You’ll also be encouraged to explore your own creative vision and design a contemporary illuminated piece.
Whether you're drawn to tradition or innovation, you'll leave with a unique, hand-crafted artwork—and golden memories to match.

BOOKBINDING: Crafting a Hand-Sewn Treasure
with Igor Kužnik

Step into the world of traditional bookmaking with Igor, a master bookmaker, and learn the timeless art of crafting your own hand-sewn miniature book from start to finish.
You’ll begin by discovering the essential materials and tools used in historical bookbinding. Then, guided by Igor, you’ll create your own book block, sewing it on a real bookbinding stand, just as artisans did centuries ago.
While your book dries, you'll turn your focus to the next exciting step—designing and crafting the leather cover, complete with a classic old-church spine. And for a golden finishing touch, Igor will demonstrate the use of a gold-press machine, showing how titles and details were traditionally embossed.
By the end of the workshop, you'll be holding a beautiful, handmade book—crafted by you, ready to be filled with stories, sketches, or secrets.
